Character Coach | Battlefield FCA

Engage. Equip. Empower.

Be the steady presence a coach and atheletes can lean on.

Some of the most important moments in sports happen off the scoreboard - when a team faces pressure, conflict, disappointment, success, and everything in between. A Character Coach helps build a team culture rooted in character, leadership, and care… and when welcomed, creates space for spiritual encouragement as well.

If God has moved in your heart to serve in this way, we’d love to connect.

What is a Character Coach?

A Character Coach is a volunteer who engages, equips, and empowers coaches and athletes spiritually through personal, character, and leadership development.

Character Coaches are a key initiative in BFCA’s mission of leading every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. This isn’t a one-time talk. It’s consistent presence with a team that opens doors for deeper ministry over time.

Our posture on campus

Battlefield FCA is a Christian ministry. We love Jesus openly, and we serve with humility and respect. Because Character Coaches often serve teams connected to public schools, we operate with clear boundaries:

  • We serve the whole team—coaches, athletes, and support staff—with care and professionalism.
  • We never pressure students to participate in spiritual activities.
  • Prayer, faith conversations, devotionals, Bible studies, and discipleship are always optional and offered by invitation.
  • We partner with the head coach and honor appropriate school and team expectations.
  • We believe trust is earned over time—and spiritual influence grows best through authentic relationships, not pressure.

What you’ll actually do as a Character Coach

Character Coaching is practical, relational, and meaningful. Depending on a coach’s vision and a team’s needs.

Be Seen. Be Known.

Be Heard.

This is the heart of how we engage, equip, and empower teams.

Engage

  • Show up consistently to build trust and relational connection
  • Encourage coaches and athletes personally through presence and care
  • Support the head coach and coaching staff as a steady, supportive partner

Equip

  • Provide practical character and leadership tools that strengthen culture
  • Help define and reinforce team values and behaviors
  • Develop captains and emerging leaders through leadership growth moments

Empower

  • Help coaches lead with clarity, conviction, and consistency
  • Reinforce identity, responsibility, and accountability within the team culture
  • Support athletes and coaches during high-pressure seasons, transitions, and challenges

The Rhythm (time expectations) of a Character Coach

Character Coaching works because it’s consistent. While every team is different, most Character Coaches serve with a rhythm like:

  • Weekly presence (1-3 days) around the team during season (practice time, team time, or intentional coach touchpoints)
  • Game presence when possible (to support the program and deepen relationships)
  • Off-season presence (weight room, workouts)
  • Regular check-ins with Battlefield FCA staff for support and coaching
  • Ongoing growth through training, community, and resources

This isn’t a “show up once” role. It’s a steady commitment that builds influence over time.

If your schedule is packed right now, we’d still love to talk, there may be other ways to serve that fit your current season.

Who this is for? You may be a great fit if you:

  • Love Jesus and want your life to point others to Him
  • Care about the next generation and the coaches who lead them
  • Can commit to consistent presence, in-season and off
  • Enjoy serving behind the scenes to strengthen culture and care
  • Want to engage, equip, and empower coaches and athletes over time
  • Are willing to learn and be trained
  • Great for those who are retired or have flexible schedules

You do not need to be a former coach or a professional speaker. You need a heart to serve, humility to partner with the head coach, and a commitment to show up.

This role may not be a fit (and that’s okay).
This may not be the best fit if:

  • You’re mainly looking for a one-time speaking opportunity
  • You can’t commit to consistent presence during the season
  • You mostly want to coach strategy, skills, or game decisions
  • You struggle serving under a head coach’s direction
  • You want a role where athletes are required to participate spiritually

If that’s you, we’re still grateful you care—and we’d love to point you to other ways to get involved that match your gifts and availability.

Training & support (you won’t do this alone)

We set Character Coaches up to succeed. You’ll receive:

  • Clear onboarding steps and expectations
  • Training that prepares you for team culture, boundaries, and best practice
  • Practical resources you can use with coaches and teams
  • Ongoing support from Battlefield FCA staff and a community of Character Coaches

Character Coach FAQs

Is a Character Coach the same as a chaplain?

Not exactly. A Character Coach establishes consistent presence to engage, equip, and empower a team through character and leadership development. Spiritual encouragement and discipleship happen when welcomed and appropriate, and always with clear boundaries.

Do athletes have to participate in anything faith-based?

No. Any faith-related component (prayer, devotionals, Bible study, spiritual conversations, discipleship) is always optional and by invitation. We never pressure students.

What if I’ve never coached?

That’s okay. Many Character Coaches are parents, leaders, mentors, and community members who love Jesus and want to serve.

How much time does it take?

It depends on the team and season, but the role works best with consistent weekly presence, 1 to 3 days and regular coach touchpoints. We’ll talk through your availability in the Discovery Call.

What if I’m interested but unsure?

Perfect. That’s what the Discovery Call is for. It’s a conversation, not a commitment.
