"Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers." ~ Jesus (Matthew 24:9)
To the Christian living in the safety of modern day America, these words of Christ may seem a bit overdone. However, world relief organizations report that over 165,000 Christians are killed because of their faith in Christ every year! In fact, each century more Christians are martyred than all of the previous centuries combined.
The attack on Christians seems to be increasing every year. Christians are mocked on talk shows, portrayed in movies and television as nuts or frauds, professors single out Bible-believing students to humiliate them, and Christians are often isolated or even shunned in the workplace or on sports teams. In fact, some sports teams make it clear that people of faith are not wanted. I personally experienced this at...get ready for this...a Christian university!
Yet, after Jesus gives this bleak picture of what will happen to many Christians, He adds "but don't panic" (v.6) because there is a day coming that will change everything and it will all be worth it "when the Son of Man comes" (v.27).
Buck up, friend, when you feel made fun of, mocked, or persecuted for your faith.
